Teach the Three Revenue Drivers: Why Owner Education Belongs in Distributed Gaming Sales
United Gaming Advisors — September 29, 2026
Most location owners have never been shown how their gaming revenue is actually produced. That gap is an opportunity. An owner who understands the drivers is a better partner, and a harder one for a competitor to poach.
Monte Cristo Gaming's Understanding Video Gaming Revenue and Performance calculator is built to teach, not just to quote a number. It reduces the whole business to three levers.
The three drivers
Game count. Capacity, capped by law. Only valuable if it's used.
Occupancy by time of day. The share of each daypart machines are in play. The lever the location actually controls, through the room, hours, service and loyalty.
Hold percentage. What machines keep after paying wins, around 9% in Illinois. Higher isn't automatically better. Players feel a tight room, and occupancy follows.
Money played × hold = net terminal income. NTI ÷ machines = win per unit, the one number that lets you compare any two locations fairly.
Why education belongs in the sales process
It reframes the pitch. Instead of "our machines are better," the conversation becomes "here's how we'll help you move occupancy."
It sets honest expectations. Showing that a typical location runs machines only a small share of the day prevents disappointment later.
It makes retention easier. Owners who understand WPU can see the value of game-mix changes, room investments and player programs.
It's the same principle behind our slot analytics and player-loyalty work in every market: make performance visible, then improve it.
About this series: Monte Cristo Gaming is an Illinois video gaming terminal operator founded by United Gaming Advisors principal Chris Schink. It is a separate company from United Gaming Advisors.
